I emailed one of my councillors. I hope they follow through. I notice the poll is up to 11 people. Where are the last four posters? I want an ombudsman. That's my constituent demand. _________________ To avoid complications, she never kept the same address In conversation, she spoke just like a baroness |

I think you just like the word ombudsman. |
|
Btw, it couldn't be a student, it would have to be an external ADULT. Because knowing the Union, people would make friends with the ombudsman and everything would be biased. |

To be honest, I picture a guy with a shirt saying "Ombudsman" and a mexican wrestling mask. Whenever the paper/Neil fucks up, he kicks them in the junk, screaming "NEUTRALITY!!!" But seriously, a union dedicated to the students shouldn't have any reasonable objection to appointing one. _________________ To avoid complications, she never kept the same address In conversation, she spoke just like a baroness |

This student union has never even bothered to complain when Sodexho cuts back the SUB cafe hours during exam period. We need more flexibility then, not less. This Student Union is at most mediocre, although I agree with having it as a student organization to represent us. At least it's not like that screwy Student Union that declared that posting stuff against abortion was sexist (where was that again? Carleton?) Let's not turn this into an argument about abortion, I'm just saying we should count our blessings that we have at least a (to some degree) objective SU. _________________ "Ah, sleek vigilant puma. I volunteer.
Edit: No, wait, this is a Union position. I should get paid for it. _________________ He is so coarse and yet so clean; so brutal, yet so kind; scorns the whole world, yet talks baby language to a girl, and will die, can we doubt it? in a madhouse. |

This is a disgraceful argument and attack on the VP of Communications. How can you been so adamant about criticizing what appears to be an error or bias in your perspective when you have proposed absolutely nothing to help the situation. It was a fact from Union council meetings and the VP wrote the truth. This hasn't created a bias, rather this has allowed for some question of how affective this candidate would be as the governing body of the SU. Furthermore, you should be ashamed to criticize the Union, and specific people, as you do. These Executives put in more time to this job than any councillor, and have managed to achieve a great deal. If students cannot take in information, understanding naturally there will be bias, and cultivate their own opinion on the matter, then shame on them. This use of X-talk to bash various people is actually disgusting. I can't see how this is constructive criticism in any way. |
|
FYI: It's called "The U". Sorry I just noticed your 'tude level was a little low so I thought I'd help out |
|
I had a hard time getting through that...yikes. Anyway, why should we feel ashamed of criticizing the criticizer? Btw, execs get paid thousands more dollars than councilors (something like 13000 compared to 150 or whatever) so it would make sense that they would do more work... Edit: and you're right Zeek, this isn't constructive. But finally someone stood and asked for some accountability because they are tired of this BS. |
|
On X talk.. it's ridiculous. If you want to question accountability, go to a fricken council meeting and deliver your sentiments there, where people can be able to defend their choices and proper debate can ensue. Messaging it on X talk seems rather, well, pathetic. |

Just to correct you on your initial statement, by no means do i (as someone who has read the comments you have brought into question) view this as being an attack on the VP of communications himself, as implied by your opening sentence. It has instead been a discussion about a comment which was posted by the VP of communications on a PUBLIC blog (and therefore open to public discussion) which was felt by some students to be inappropriate given the context within which it was posted. Secondly, regarding your statement that "you should be ashamed to criticize the Union... these executives put in more time to this job", you've pointed out something very important here, and that the VP's are doing a job... and who are they doing this job for? well, the student body of St.F.X.! Therefore, if a student takes issue with something that has been done in the name of "The U" (such as posting on a public blog WITH "The U" logo on it), a body which represents them, then I feel they have every right to question it. By no means should they feel "shame" for speaking their mind within the democratic framework that "The U" upholds. In fact, they should be applauded for having the courage to stand up and make their opinion and feelings heard and finally, potential irony alert! (since we all love irony)... your comment about bashing people on X-talk being disgusting comes after what seems like your bashing of the majority of the posters in this thread for sharing an opinion on this issue that clearly does not match your own... _________________ Wait, what if the hokey pokey IS what it's all about? |

Everyone is making a mountain out of a molehill. The VP Communications should be impartial. Controversy may exist now about whether or not he is, and one would hope he would err on the side of caution and take down the comment that students have expressed concern with. That would put an end to all this arguing. It seems that he is just sticking to his guns to prove a point. |

Well said, Miramichier. Zeek, critical thinking is one of the things I'm proud to have learned at this University. Discussions on xtalk give people a chance to be aware of issues affecting them and give them a chance to figure out how they feel about it. If this were to be a private presentation before council, it might not offer the same diversity of opinions, and fewer people would be aware of this as an issue. I think Senther had every right to bring it up and ask questions about it. Neil, as well as other people who are able to shed some light on this issue, likely will. If he hasn't done anything wrong, he'll probably be more than happy to offer his side of things. What's the problem with that? |

WTF Have you ever read any of these discussions before? Anyone and everyone is allowed to be as opinionated as they want. Kind of like how your being right now. That being said, I think the article was a bit out of line, but what pushed me over the edge was OUR student union VP’s reaction to it. I found his comment to be a distasteful prod at MacGillivray and should be held accountable. If ANY student (even one) has a problem with what was written an employee of THE STUDENT's UNION should be nothing but considerate. Instead, we get attitude and an overall sense of annoyance from him? I have a slight problem with what was written, but I’m totally disgusted with the way Neil handled it, I might even go as far as saying it was "disgraceful" too. |

I don't think the comment is biased, I think it is too obtuse. Are all of the issues in their platform un-pushed by MacGilvary? Let's just hope this doesn't end up like Kenya...ethnic warfare hasn't occured in the U since Brian Mulrooney was at X. _________________ There is one safeguard known generally to the wise, which is an advantage and security to all, but especially to democracies as against despots. Ah the annual rag on the Union sessions are in full bloom. This happens every year at election time, and won't simmer down until the frost is gone. NEXT topic will be when there is a Pres/VP, they only hire their friends to positions. Maning on here isn't gonna help. Email the returning officers, and they may help the "victim" out by allowing them more poster spaces, or a better placement of ads to make up for the offending problem. IF it is decided there is a problem. So far, this is pretty small. _________________ Stupid poetic justice! |

I think if the current union has any comment on the potential leaders for next year, they should do the same. Not post it to a blog. Seems rather, well, pathetic. smokin joe wrote: Email the returning officers

I love how every year around election time the job the VP communications has been doing comes under question and someone runs their campaign on how they can do it better. as far as I'm concerned if I wanted to know about the candidates I am going to be voting for a comment such as Quote: Interestingly, as a union councilor, MacGillivary never pushed these ideas at the council table.
is information I want to know about. It shows something about the candidate. This is not biased, its a fact/observation about the candidate and how they have addressed the issue. Yes it effects the campaign and it has swayed my vote, but, it's also a true statement of what the candidate has done already being in a capacity to do something about the issue. _________________ Growing old is mandatory; growing up is optional. |
