Cormier does any professor (union rep or something) actually read that contract? A lot of it is bound to be tedious legalese. The numbers do look like salaries - I thought it was including benefits based on the number sizes but forgot to account for inflation. Does this mean that pay does or does not vary from department to department? These numbers look intended to be across-the-board.

How do they measure excellence in teaching and HQ Personnel ? Research I can see being easier to measure.

It's across the board. HQP isn't something that the university measures; it's a characteristic that NSERC (and, I suppose, other granting agencies) want. It doesn't appear in or apply to our contract. Excellence in teaching is in part evaluated by the course evaluations students fill in, as well as (sometimes) classroom visits by the evaluating committee, the development of new courses, labs and other teaching tools, other information from students, and so forth. It is, however, a tricky thing to accurately evaluate, since how well something was taught might not be apparent until much later. And yes, we do read the contract,. At the very least, people look at the part that applies to them. Chairs and administrators, obviously, need to be cognizant of the conditions of employment of all their staff.

Does the union have a legal counsel for the tricky points? Just wondering.

You messed up the dots for lines 13 in stats 1 and line 9 in stats 2. This just threw the whole thing off for me. If it's not in perfect symmetry, it shouldn't be posted.

I'd be pissed about wasting my tuition on a strike semester, but that's just me.

Inflation does not go down year to year in those columns but the nominal increase in salary decreases somewhere close to 2/3 of the way. After a few years itdrops below inflation so the real value of the salary decreases - it happens in different years depending on the inflation column and whether you are looking at the AUT offer and StFX offer.

StFX sent around an email saying that the university and the AUT have asked the Minister of Labour for a conciliator, so it may be resolved with arbitration.

It was more of a bargaining move than anything, I think. Did everybody get the email that repeated their move toward arbitration?

If the university has to pay more for professors won't they just have less professors and increase class size to financially compensate?

The professor-to-student ratio will be affected by lots of things, including relative salary increases vs inflation, given revenues from government funding, endowment funding, donations, tuition etc. and what they do with other expenditures. So the answer is that it is not impossible but there isn't reason to assume that.

Or not spend our dollars on buildings we aren't even free to use as students? *cough cough Coady, KMC etc* Why can't students rent rooms in the KMC for student orientated events for free? We paid out of our tuition for it. The rest were donations, we had no choice, they did.

Same with the SUb, the new Coady buildings, etc. If the rooms are sitting empty and unused, and many of them are at certain points during hte day why not us?

Any new info released?

Funny story here. You can use the KMC rooms for free if it is for a society event, I know for a fact you can because it has happened. They arent going to just let some student have it because they want to play video games on the fucking projector, watch a movie, throw a party so they dont have to clean their house, etc.
I see people studying in rooms at the sub all the time (in the mackay lounge, council chambers, the other rooms as well on the 4th floor. You can use the Coady building but its locked on the weekends.
Do you just complain about things that you assume arent being done?
The gym is closed overnight too, your pay tuition to that as well why not complain about that while you are at it.

Funny story here, according to the management at the KMC if I wanted to book a room to run a charity gaming event as a society it would cost me. Lots. of. Money. I have asked.

I don't just assume, I have talked to both the management of the SUB and the KMC. The Sub wants upwards of 200 dollars. Rolling Eyes Albeit this was last year, but given the information in the Presidents pack suggested paying for the Sub again.

And no, again, according to Conference Services it will cost me money to rent the Coady building rooms or to use them for an evening. Feel free to give them a call and let me know if they tell you differently, but at the moment, what I am complaining about is what I am told directly by the people who say they're in charge of it.
