TheU.ca Forum Index - Campus Services - X-Talk Forum software upgrade (finally!) - Reply to topic

Hey all, I want to give you all a heads up that over the course of this week, I'll be upgrading the forum software on X-Talk. This will include *some* downtime, but will have a nice new forum software once completed (probably not a new skin for awhile... but I'll see what I can do). Dan |

Upgrading phpBB to 3.0.5, or something else? |
|
phpBB3, as much as I would love to use vBulletin, it wasn't really in our budget. Sure there are some other great open source forum software out there... but in my experience, phpBB is usually the best/fully features/quick-to-patch/etc. *shrug*, Dan |

The U could save tons of money if they went down that route for everything, not limited to software. |

That kind of license isn't looked fondly upon in the non brokeassed student world Hey Dan, the date is an hour back... any chance of changing it? _________________ Man is the lowest-cost, 150-pound, nonlinear, all-purpose computer system which can be mass-produced by unskilled labor. |

I'll make sure it's all fixed in the upgrade. And I don't think it would be idea to "get a license" :p. I personally have an license, but it's old now and I don't have access to updates. It looks like we're going with phpBB. If you have other ideas/suggestions, I'd be glad to hear them. :p |

Hi all, The beta forums are up at http://xtalk.beta.theu.ca Please remember this is a beta forum, and it's not even on the same server as XTalk. If you find any bugs please report them to the tracker (http://tracker.theu.ca/projects/general/issues/new). I still haven't worked out a theme for the board yet, and the board posts/user registration/user settings/etc. don't sync up with this board. I will eventually set up an hourly cron job to sync the posts, but I haven't yet. Please test the board out. Thanks! Dan |
|
I should also mention that we aren't going to necessarily used phpBB3 for the forum software. We're looking at a few others. If you have any suggestions, feel free to PM/email me and let me know! Dan |

I actually considered it. I've never actually used it though. How does it rank up? |

You should be able to. _________________ Man is the lowest-cost, 150-pound, nonlinear, all-purpose computer system which can be mass-produced by unskilled labor. |

I actually considered it. I've never actually used it though. How does it rank up? Never actually installed it myself (developed a propriety solution with my team at work) - however it looks like it does markup fairly well. You should look into it. Looks simple and straight to the point IMO. |

You should be able to. They are on completely different servers, and there is no way I am opening up MySQL to the world on the firewall. Plus, they don't have necessarily the same DB structure (between phpBB2 and phpBB3). So even if they were, using the same DB probably wouldn't work. |

So, I think I've convinced Sarah to give vBulletin a run. I've (personally) got an old copy (3.7) but the license has run out. Maybe I'll donate it to you goof balls. |
