I suspect no one does know, administration included. There's no real precedent in recent memory for students losing an entire semester, but tuition refunds haven't been given for extended strikes that don't result in the loss of a semester. I think there is a class action lawsuit against York looking for a 12% refund after they lost 3 weeks in fall/winter 08. One thing I'd recommend is checking out the calendar to see if strikes are specifically named in the "fine print" as something beyond university control. They are at some Ontario universities but not sure if that is the case at X. |

I think the term that you'd be searching for in the fine print would be "class stoppages" kind of a catch all to save the ass of teh administration _________________ Holly |

Possibly, yeah. A few of the schools in Ontario (that I know of) name strikes specifically as an uncontrollable causes of class stoppage due to the precarious labour situation there. |

I'm interested in hearing what happened at the meeting that happened today _________________ My father believed that laughter was the best medicine...I guess that's why several of us died of tuberculosis. My computer beat me at chess... I beat it at kickboxing |

Ya... what the word of the bird... I believe our prof is going to tell us abit tomorrow... But thats only til 3:45.. Bah. |

I don't know, but the word on the Facebook group from Jenny Sullivan is: Conciliation did not result in a settlement. The StFXAUT will be in a legal strike position in just over two weeks. The newest "Earliest Possible Date for a Strike" is February 22nd. That's all I have heard! |

Well one prof told me today that it's not looking good. It's leaning more towards a strike than not. _________________ My father believed that laughter was the best medicine...I guess that's why several of us died of tuberculosis. My computer beat me at chess... I beat it at kickboxing |

Oh, wait. It'd be awesome if they waited to strike until the day after Spring Break was suppose to end. Early March sometime, then it extends our vacations and would largely increase student support I imagine. |

With the new projection from the Administration (The PDF We got) I am curious what they include in the pay rates. Is it straight salary or is it "Total Salary Dollars" - What does that mean? It also is aiming at increasing tuition by 9% over the next 3 years.wtf, We're already paying the most. Find someone else to get the money from, might I suggest not building a massive new project next year. |

We should go on strike. We do have a union, after all. |

9% is a rate of approximately 2.8% annually, certainly likely higher than the rate of inflation. The 'update' sent to our email accounts shows that the University is in fact offering faculty a real increase but unfortunately its usefulness is compromised by not having other faculties' salaries to compare to. _________________ " '... and I'm like, 'global warming? Apartment Style. The new business building. The Music Building. The Health Center. Bishop's Hall. The new Coady. Football Field. KMC? This administration has gone on a renovation spree and not all of it is private money. Donation or not, they're burning our tuition dollars on buildings only a small small portion of the school will ever see or use. We could stop building something new every 4 months and likely save quite a bit over the past few years - but Riley is obsessed with having new things to show off to Alumni. |

There is a legitimate debate over how much to invest in upgrading things; for the record, the football field was government dollars, at least in part. Stimulus spending, remember? The business building and science building are both necessary, as well. One could debate some of the others. Some investment is necessary; some (parking lots) is questionable. _________________ " '... and I'm like, 'global warming? I thought this was a conference about chronic flatulence!' The business building and the fooseball field were/are government money allocated for those two things, but the others I don't know. |

Pedal, I feel that you are talking about something that you know very little about. It is true that a lot of funding comes from donations from alumni that are restricted for buildings and such as stipulated by the donor. As far as governors and apartment style go yes they waste money and whatnot but about 4-5 years ago St.F.X had somewhat of a housing crisis where the ammount of students enrolled at St.F.X had nowhere to live because res was full and so were all/most off campus apartments (Antigonish homeowners and apartment owners and such). It was actually quite an issue and was on the news and everything. The new residences, though certainly over the top, were necessary to ensure that enrollment did not decline because of students frightened f not finding a place to live. Bishops hall had to be redone because it was terrible inside. Yes, big screens do seem over the top but it contributes to the overall satisfaction of students on res. and word of mouth is some of the best advertising for universities. Most of the other Universities also have residences that are very much like governors and apartment style so St.F.X. almost needs those things to compete for student enrollment. Both the business building and football field are part of the government stimulus package and were restricted for use on infrastructure. The KMC was funded by massive donations, just check that wall of plaques near the rink. The donations from the students were the result of a 5 year capital campaign voted for by the students. The other buildings... honestly, I don't know but clearly neither do you. One thing that you need to understand is that in any organization the money spent on infrastructure has the lowest measurable return on investment. It does have a return but it is in many indirect ways that cannot be necessary. Student and employee satisfaction and moral for one. Reputation being another. Those things all give the university a return but it is impossible to directly measure that back to infrastructure dollars spent. I would just like to add that if anyone has any information that contradicts anything I said above please feel free as I am certainly no expert and the fundings for buildings is just what I remember so it may not be completely accurate. _________________ Holly |

the issue i feel with the campus is that everything is done over the top and not thought through. there needs to be functional and reliable, so we aren't fixing things that could have easily been avoided. look at the Mediterranean flooring that is in the PSC... oh they forgot to protect it from salt.. like seriously!! and they rush EVERYthing, Governor's has terrible construction, had lights falling from the ceiling and huge cracks between molding. They spend just as much money fixing their issues as they do on everything else that is basic maintenance. the six p theory would help with this along with the proper time allotment. Proper planning prevents piss poor performance; in this case, performance of our bang for the buck. I know that a lot of government assistance was used in bringing the football field here and many personal and private investments for the KMC and Schwartz school of business. as for the profs etc, good on them for wanting competitive wages and sticking to their guns. _________________ "Right, I'm being cynical.
